Last of the Line
You would think that in Lorseth, the seat of the government of Prince Anaxantis, Warlord of Great Renuvia, a place teeming with his soldiers, pages, and squires, nobody would be so bold as to commit murder. Let alone in bright daylight.Think again.
One morning passersby discover the naked body of a murdered young man. Prince Anaxantis is absent, inspecting his southern borders, and so his closest assistant and steward, Tomar Parmingh, has the unenviable task to try solving who killed the boy. To make matters worse, suspicions rise the victim was the scion of a noble House, about to enlist as a page at the princely court.
As a responsible caretaker, Tomar can miss these kinds of incidents like a hole in the head. Even more so because there are rumors of rebellion against Prince Anaxantis’s regime. Out of sheer desperation, he engages the help of the capricious head pages Rahendo of Eldorn and Ryhunzo of Uberon, partners in mischief. Initially, he only wants them to identify the victim, if possible.
But, of course, one thing leads to another, and much against his better judgement Tomar entrusts them with a far more important mission: escort the remains of the boy home and find out who murdered him. Agneth, an orphan who acts, not wholeheartedly, as their manservant accompanies them.
The intrepid trio soon discovers that all members of the House of Durnsley, except one, come under suspicion of having murdered one of their own.
